If financials bottom, that would definitely help to end the bear market. But, they may bottom first as other sectors fall. For example, energy, agribusiness, solar, etc. could fall while financials start to move sideways. The leaders are starting to struggle including the Nasdaq. I would continue to be patient.

Regarding DUG are you still holding after today? I was wrestling with making it a swing trade vs. selling.
Maybe I should have hung on, but I got in DUG at the end of yesterday and sold around 1:50 today...decent gain for such a lousy market. I will continue to monitor the ETF shorts as they have been rewarding. Thanks for your very valuable input.

Karl,

I really appreciate your blog comments.

One note - the VIX looks like it is reversing, and the XLF and IYF charts are showing significantly lower volume on these new lows (meaning much less selling of finance). At least that is how I see it.

If finance bottoms soon, could that be the end of the bear market? I'm looking at the MACD in 1Q 2003 and it look eerily similar.

The funny thing is, the Russell 2000 and the NASDAQ were leading the charge in the rally, now they look to be softening. Plays like McDonalds and the like look really good right now.
